Adam Carolla Talks Horror Movies with RT

INSANE . . . AWESOME . . . FUNNY (these guys are the next Siskel & Ebert if the editor-in-chief wouldn't exhibit latent-annoyance with Adam Corrola :

THE THING; THE SHINING; HALLOWEEN; SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

. . . The makers of Silence of the Lambs would not acknowledge it as a horror film and barred FANGORIA Magazine entrance to the set.

Silence of the Lambs is the first Horror-Film to earn an Academy Award.

I am happy to hear John Carpenter's THE THING being mentioned as a Favorite Horror Movie (as it wasn't mentioned in the Top 50 Horror Movies on Rotten Tomatoes).

so . . . John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN and John Carpenter's THE THING are Favorite Horror movies By Default, John Carpenter must be The Best Horror Director!!!

---
problem:

Silence of the Lambs is a Thriller and John Carpenter's The Thing is Science-Fiction . . . why aren't they both called Horror Films?

like Friday the 13th is a Horror Film, Night of the Living Dead is a Horror Film . . .

Because Silence of the Lambs AND John Carpenter's The Thing CONTAIN ELEMENTS of other genres (Detective-Fiction and Science-Fiction respectively) they cannot be considered straight A-to-Z Horror films.

Game 6 thriller gets best Series rating since '09 (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? The Cardinals' thrilling 10-9, 11-inning victory over the Texas Rangers in Game 6 received the best World Series television rating since 2009.

Thursday night's game got a 12.7 fast national rating and 21 share, Fox said Friday. It was the highest-rated World Series game since the New York Yankees' Series clincher against Philadelphia got a 13.4 two years ago, and it was the highest-rated game not involving the Yankees since the finale of the 2005 Series between the Chicago White Sox and Houston received a 13.0/21.

This year's Series is averaging a 9.3/15, up 11 percent over the 8.4/14 for San Francisco's five-game win over the Rangers last year. With the World Series going to a Game 7 for the first time since 2002, the final average should increase.

The game received a 49.4/70 in St. Louis, with a share peaking at 82 in the final 30 minutes, and drew a 47.1/67 in Dallas.

Fox had its highest-prime time rating since the finale of "American Idol" in May.

The rating is the percentage of television households tuned to a program, and the share is the percentage watching among those households with TVs on at the time.

Women's Professional Soccer terminates franchise (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Women's Professional Soccer has terminated its South Florida franchise after clashing with the owner all season.

The 3-year-old league announced Thursday that its Board of Governors had voted two days earlier to terminate magicJack, one of its six teams this past season. The magicJack (10-8-2) featured Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and several member of the U.S. team that played in the World Cup this summer.

In May, the club was docked a point in the standings and a draft pick for not meeting league standards.

In August, after owner Dan Borislow filed suit against the WPS in Florida court, the league released a statement accusing him of violations ranging from "unprofessional and disparaging treatment of his players to failure to pay his bills."

The WPS claimed that "Mr. Borislow's actions have been calculated to tarnish the reputation of the league and damage the league's business relationships."

Even Congress hates Congress (Politico)

Their approval ratings are so bad these days that even Congress hates Congress.

Sen. Lindsey Graham is so embarrassed about the 9 percent approval rating ? released Tuesday night in a New York Times/CBS poll ? that he?s going incognito.

?It?s so bad sometimes I tell people I?m a lawyer,? the South Carolina Republican told POLITICO on Wednesday. ?I don?t want to be associated with a body that in the eyes of your fellow citizens seems to be dysfunctional. It matters to me.?

?We?re below sharks and contract killers,? added freshman Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.).

Indeed, lawmakers themselves aren?t among the 9 percent who approve of their own work.

The record low approval ratings were met Wednesday with a mixture of shock, anger, sadness, frustration and wry gallows humor, with many lawmakers wondering who in their right mind would actually believe Congress is worthy of approval.

But in predictable partisan fashion, they blamed each other, President Barack Obama, the economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the public?s failure to grasp how Congress is supposed to work, among other causes.

?I want to know who the 9 percent are, I?m afraid they have drivers? licenses,? quipped Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.).

In spite of the jokes, the shockingly low congressional approval rating could become a drag on both Republican and Democratic incumbents ahead of next year?s elections.

It also puts even more pressure on the powerful deficit-slashing supercommittee to do something - anything - to break the political stalemate over slashing the U.S. budget deficit.

And the long-term effects of such negative numbers for Capitol Hill, and Washington in general, could prompt more voters to abandon party affiliation and register as independents, dramatically reshaping political campaigns, lawmakers suggested Wednesday.

Political operatives in both parties see opportunity as well. Republicans think they can grab control of the Senate in 2012, and Democrats are hopeful they can win back their House majority, swept away in the 2010 tea party tsunami. Such a double switch has never happened before in American history.

Still, some lawmakers believe that they?ll be fine politically since voters historically tend to stick with their own representatives even if Congress is tanking.

?That high?? joked Rep. John Larson (Conn.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said in response to the poll. ?It?s reflective of the public?s response to the quagmire that?s become Washington, D.C. Fourteen million people out of work, 25 million people that are [under-employed], they see Washington involved in an endless ?Tastes great, less filling? argument where nothing gets done.?

?It?s kind of like Tennessee football - it?s a hard season,? deadpanned Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), a depressed alumnus of the University of Tennessee and backer of the troubled Volunteer football program.

While Congress has never been a popular institution in the eyes of the public, 2011?s nasty partisan battles between the GOP-controlled House and Democratic-led Senate - compounded with the $14 trillion-plus national debt and stubbornly high unemployment rate ? seem to have only made matters worse.

It is unlikely that the U.S. economy will get much better before voters go to the polls next November, meaning each party will aggressively make the case that the other is to blame. That means more partisan wrangling.

House votes to boost huge Arizona copper mine (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The House approved a federal land swap Wednesday that would clear the way for creation of North America's largest copper mine in Arizona, despite opposition from the Obama administration and complaints that the proposed mine operator had partnered with Iran and faces allegations of human rights violations.

The swap would trade 2,400 acres of federal forest land in southeastern Arizona for about 5,300 acres of environmentally sensitive land throughout the state controlled by a subsidiary of global mining giant Rio Tinto. The bill passed the Republican-controlled House on a 235-186 vote.

GOP lawmakers and business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Mining Association, say the proposed mine, 70 miles east of Phoenix, would pump billions of dollars into the Arizona economy and help create nearly 4,000 mining-related jobs.

The Obama administration and many Democratic lawmakers opposed the land swap, saying an environmental review should be completed before the exchange is made.

Democrats also complained that the mining company will not have to pay royalties to the U.S. government for lucrative mineral rights that could be worth billions of dollars. And they said the proposed mine site contains sacred Native American artifacts and important cultural areas that would be displaced by the mine.

But their arguments were overridden by Republicans who said the mine would be a major job creator and would help reduce imports of copper used in a wide range of items, including cars, lamps and computers.

"There is no excuse for the United States to depend on foreign nations for our minerals supplies when we have ample reserves that could be developed here at home," said Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee.

Hastings and other Republicans dismissed Democratic complaints that the bill short-circuited necessary environmental reviews. The mine project cannot proceed without a battery of federal environmental reviews and consultation with Native American tribes, Hastings said.

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., the bill's sponsor, said the land swap "does not pre-empt anything," such as the Antiquities Act, the National Environmental Policy Act or other laws.

But Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., said the environmental review should be conducted now, when the U.S. government has the most leverage over the project. Once land that now is part of the Tonto National Forest is turned over to private control, the government's ability to require changes and enforce the law "is really limited at best," he said.

Under the plan, first proposed in 2005, a Rio Tinto subsidiary would gain access to more than 2,400 acres of federal forest land thought to contain vast resources of high-grade copper, potentially worth billions of dollars.

In exchange, about 5,300 acres of environmentally sensitive and recreational land throughout Arizona would be transferred to federal control, including 3,000 acres on the lower San Pedro River in southeastern Arizona and 940 acres to be added to the Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch southeast of Tucson. The land is controlled by Resolution Copper Co., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, a London and Australia-based company that operates mines worldwide.

Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., said the House vote rewarded a company that partners with Iran to mine nuclear material, a reference to a uranium mine in Namibia owned by Rio Tinto in which Iran has a minority stake.

In a statement late Wednesday, Rio Tinto said, "The government of Iran, which acquired its 15 percent stake in Rossing (a Rio Tinto affiliate) in 1975, does not gain access to any nuclear technology through its investment, has no uranium product off-take rights and all dividend payments have been frozen. Rio Tinto has a strong and long-standing policy of compliance with all applicable economic sanctions and laws."

Rio Tinto also faces a lawsuit in the U.S. claiming that it aided the government of Papua New Guinea in genocide and war crimes in the late 1980s. A decade-long civil war began after islanders sabotaged a copper mine that islanders said was fouling the environment. Many people were killed in violent clashes with the Papua New Guinea military.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals allowed claims of racial discrimination and crimes against humanity to go forward.

Bruce Richardson, a spokesman for Rio Tinto, said Wednesday that the company will "vigorously defend ourselves against these improper claims."

Separately, Grijalva, Markey and other Democrats complained that under current law, the mining company will not have to pay any royalties to the U.S. government for mineral rights that could be worth as much as $7 billion.

"A foreign-owned company doing business on U.S. public lands is basically getting a blank check on extraction (of copper) and a green light from Congress to go ahead and begin this without any return on the money," Grijalva said.

Jon Cherry, a vice president of Resolution Copper, said the mine could generate as much as $61 billion in economic benefit for Arizona "without the need for one dollar of federal stimulus."

The legislation hasn't yet come up in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where it's expected to encounter greater resistance.

Asian stocks jump as Japan reports exports growth (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets jumped Monday, buoyed by hopes of progress in resolving Europe's debt crisis and positive export figures from Japan that point toward a recovery from a devastating tsunami earlier this year.

Oil prices rose above $88 a barrel. The dollar fell against the euro but rose against the yen.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index added 1.8 percent to 8,830.63 after the government said exports grew for a second straight month in September.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng soared 3.9 percent to 18,731.74 and South Korea's Kospi climbed 2.9 percent to 1,892.40. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, India, Indonesia and the Philippines were also higher.

Mainland China's Shenzhen Composite Index slipped 0.8 percent to 951.89 while the Shanghai Composite Index for China's main stock market gained 0.4 percent to 2,325.30.

European leaders are to meet Wednesday to hammer out a concrete resolution to the region's debt problems, including ways to fortify the euro 440 billion ($600 billion) bailout fund to help prevent larger economies that use the euro common currency, such as Italy, from being dragged into the crisis.

Weeks of intensive discussions by European leaders have so far failed to produce a decisive outcome.

"Markets will remain nervous ahead of Wednesday's EU summit, hoping that officials can settle their differences and emerge with a concrete solution. In this respect, the risk of disappointment is high," Credit Agricole CIB said in a research note.

Japan's Finance Ministry said Monday that exports rose 2.4 percent in September compared with a year earlier, marking the second consecutive month of growth. Japan's exports suffered a five-month decline in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeast Japan.

South Korean constructions shares rose on expectations that the death of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi would lead to the resumption of construction projects in the North African country, Yonhap News Agency reported. Daewoo surged 5 percent. Hyundai Heavy Industries jumped 6.4 percent.

Chinese banking shares soared ahead of earnings reports to be released this week, analysts said. Hong Kong-listed Agricultural Bank of China jumped 8.8 percent, and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China gained 5.8 percent.

Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong, said speculative investors appeared to be scooping up what were thought to be bargain-priced Hong Kong stocks.

"Today, there is some bargain-hunting for sectors like the Chinese insurance sector and Hong Kong property," he said. Hong Kong-listed Ping An Insurance gained 6.8 percent. China Overseas Land & Investment Ltd. was up 6.7 percent.

In the U.S. on Friday, enthusiasm for stocks was on the upswing amid some positive third-quarter earnings reports from U.S. companies, which come despite a weak economy. Among S&P 500 companies reporting so far, seven out of ten have posted higher profits than expected.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 267.01 points, or 2.3 percent, to 11,808.79. The Dow is now up 2 percent from where it started 2011. Before Friday's surge, it was down for the year. The Dow has risen for four weeks straight, the first time that has happened since January.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3902 from $1.3864 Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 76.21 yen from 76.12 yen.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was up 79 cents at $88.20 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.33 to settle at $87.40 in New York on Friday.

Brent crude was up 70 cents at $110.26 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Epstein promising a better Cubs team, in time

Theo Epstein, Tom Ricketts

By RICK GANO

updated 1:55 p.m. ET Oct. 25, 2011

CHICAGO - Theo Epstein is promising a better Cubs team. It will just take time.

Epstein was introduced Tuesday as the new president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs, who hope he can work the same magic for the championship-starved team as he did for the Boston Red Sox.

"To me, baseball is better with tradition, baseball is better with history, baseball is better with fans who care, baseball is better in ballparks like this, baseball is better during the day. And baseball is, best of all, when you win," Epstein said during a packed Wrigley Field news conference.

"I firmly believe that we can preserve the things that make the Cubs so special and over time build a consistent winner, a team that will be playing baseball in October consistently and a team that will ultimately win the World Series."

The 37-year-old Epstein left the Red Sox with a year left on his contract as general manager. The Cubs finally made the announcement Friday night, but held off on the news conference until Tuesday, a travel day for the World Series.

Still to be determined is compensation from the Cubs to the Red Sox for plucking Epstein away. With that still pending, the focus was squarely on Epstein, with nearly 100 media members attending his inaugural news conference and "Cubs Welcome Theo Epstein" splashed across the famous Wrigley Field marquee at the corner of Clark and Addison on Tuesday morning.

The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and one of Epstein's first decisions will be deciding the future of manager Mike Quade, who has a year left on his two-year deal.

"We have plans to meet in person sometime over the next week," Epstein said. "I'd like to hear his vision for the organization. ... We'll get together as a group and decide where to go from there."

Various reports say the Cubs aren't through bringing in front office staff from other teams and San Diego's GM Jed Hoyer and Padres assistant Jason McLeod could be reunited with Epstein in Chicago. The three worked together in Boston and Hoyer could be the Cubs' new GM.

Epstein said the Cubs must build a foundation and a solid minor league system.

"We won't rest until there is a steady stream of talent" coming to Wrigley Field from the minors," he said. "We're going to have to grind our way to the top."

The Cubs haven't been in the World Series since 1945 and haven't won it all in 103 years. With Epstein at the helm, the Red Sox ended an 86-year drought by winning the Series in 2004 and followed that up with another title three years later.

Epstein fits the description owner Tom Ricketts put forth after he fired Jim Hendry this summer ? he uses math and formulas as one way to determine the value of players while also combining those evaluations with scouting.

"We began that search in August and I said I was looking for someone with a background in player development, someone who has a proven track record of success, someone who has a strong analytical background and someone who has experience in creating a culture of winning," Ricketts said. "It was also important to me that that person who would not be content with past successes but would build on those success to improve themselves and improve the organization.

"I simply cannot imagine a better person for this job that Theo Epstein."

Under Epstein's guidance, Boston went 839-619 (.575) in the regular season and a 34-23 in the playoffs, winning more than 90 games in all but two seasons. He acquired such stars as David Ortiz, Curt Schilling, Jason Bay and Adrian Gonzalez, though he will be remembered for bringing in highly-priced players who fell short, including Edgar Renteria, Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lackey. This season it was Carl Crawford who didn't meet expectations after signing a big contract.

Epstein has a history of smart draft moves (Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Clay Buchholz) and he has spent freely. His tenure in Boston ended poorly when the Red Sox collapsed in September and missed the playoffs for the second straight season.

Photographers tap their wild side to win

Dave Stock, deputy picture editor

Gallery: Our pick of the winners

?Dedication, resilience, courage, resourcefulness, cunning - essential survival attributes of many wild animals.? This introduction to the portfolio for the Veolia Environnement Wildlife photographer of the year 2011, by judge Joe Cornish, lists character traits that apply equally well to the photographers of the winning images as they do to their subjects.

This year?s winner is a case in point. Daniel Beltra?s image ?still life in oil? depicts eight Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) covered in crude oil as they undergo the first stage of cleaning at a bird-rescue facility in Fort Jackson, Louisiana. Despite its perfect composition and almost staged look, Beltra actually shot the photograph in a brief 10-second window as volunteers helping rescue these birds briefly opened the door to move a pelican in or out.

Daniel Beltra?Greenpeace.jpg(Image: Daniel Beltra/Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011)

The birds were victims of last year's Deepwater Horizon disaster, which, at its height, was leaking up to 6.4 million litres of oil per day into the Gulf of Mexico and caused severe ecological damage to the area. ?I could easily see this image as iconic of the disaster,? said judging chair Mark Carwardine, introducing the winner at the awards ceremony at London?s Natural History Museum this week.

The image?s newsworthiness swung it. ?We want to see something different,? explained judge Michael Aw. ?If a fantastic image of a topic or subject has been photographed well before, then that becomes the benchmark. An image might be amazing, but if it doesn?t better the benchmark it will be disregarded?. Of Beltra?s image, Aw remarked that: ?In any other year, I?m not sure that this image would have won?.

he image formed one part of a sequence that won Beltra the coveted "wildlife photojournalist of the year" award. His beautifully executed, painterly aerial shots, captured the sheer scale of the spill. Oil and water mix in stunningly beautiful colours and abstract shapes, yet the images are unnerving, bringing home the scale of the disaster by providing a birds-eye view of the acres of oil spreading out from the Deepwater rig. A tiny boat, little more than a speck on the blighted seascape, informs the scale of Beltra?s aptly titled "Toxic Beauty".

Elsewhere, technique played a part in deciding other winning images. Last years overall winner Bence M?t? returned to take the Eric Hosking Award for the forth time. The prize, awarded to photographers aged 18 to 26, showcases a portfolio of 6 images representative of the photographers work. In "pelican perspective", M?t? planned a complex setup to capture an unusual, wide angle, water level shot of Dalmatian pelicans (Pelecanus crispus), catching one of the birds receiving a tasty fish into its pouch. For the shot M?t? utilised a floating pontoon and numerous flash units wired together and operated remotely.

Bence_Mate.jpg
(Image: Bence M?t?/Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011)

"It was a huge buzz to find that the contraption actually worked", said M?t?, but it wasn?t without hiccups. As he explained in his acceptance speech, it was his team?s resourcefulness - one of those essential attributes highlighted by Cornish - that snatched the project from the jaws of disaster. When one of the flash units burnt out it took the technical ingenuity of M?t??s assistant, who scavenged parts from a hotel remote control to repair the damaged equipment, to rescue the shoot.

Aspiring to evolve her photography skills, the winner of the under 10s category, Hui Yu Kim, melted hearts with her pre-recorded video acceptance message (she could not make to the ceremony because of exams): "I will try harder and promise to come back better next year", she says. Her image, simple entitled Alien uses macro photography techniques to get up close with a tropical flat-faced longhorn beetle (Aegomorphus quadrigibbus), taken on a family trip to Gunung Jeri, Malaysia.

Hui Yu Kim.jpg(Image: Hui Yu Kim/Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011)

It?s dedication like Kim?s that is perhaps the essential trait that unifies all the winning photographers, and results in the collection of breathtaking photographs that comprise this year?s images.

The Veolia Environment Wildlife photographer of the year images can be seen at the Natural History Museum, London, until 11 March 2012.

Summary Box: EBay holiday forecast disappoints (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? THE OUTLOOK: EBay disappointed investors Wednesday with its fourth-quarter forecast. CEO John Donahoe said in a conference call with analysts that the company expects an "OK to solid" holiday season.

THE CONCERN: EBay has reported good holiday quarters for the past two years, even as the economy has been weak overall. Its expectations may indicate this holiday season won't be great for retailers in general.

THE RESULTS: The operator of online marketplace eBay.com and online payment service PayPal also said third-quarter net income rose 14 percent, helped by people increasingly shopping and transferring funds with its mobile apps.

Philip Morris Int'l 3Q net up on higher prices (AP)

RICHMOND, Va. ? Cigarette maker Philip Morris International Inc. said Thursday that its third-quarter net income grew nearly 31 percent as it sold more cigarettes, particularly in Asia, and raised prices.

The seller of Marlboro and other cigarette brands overseas also lifted the lower end of its full-year earnings forecast by 5 cents. It now expects profit of $4.75 to $4.80. Analysts had expected earnings of $4.75 for 2011.

The company's July-September quarter topped analyst expectations, and shares rose $2.18, or 3.3 percent, to $68.21 in late morning trading.

Philip Morris International earned $2.38 billion, or $1.35 per share, up from $1.82 billion, or 99 cents per share, a year ago. Adjusted for one-time costs, the company earned $1.37 per share.

Excluding excise taxes, revenue grew about 26 percent to $8.4 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet had expected earnings of $1.24 per share on revenue of $7.54 billion.

Philip Morris International said the number of cigarettes it shipped grew 4.5 percent to 239.5 billion cigarettes. Total Marlboro shipments rose 4 percent to 78.9 billion cigarettes.

Shipments to Asia rose nearly 13 percent, and revenue for the region jumped 53 percent. Chief Financial Officer Hermann Waldemer said in a conference call with investors that the Asian market is the "growth engine" of Philip Morris International. Growth in Asia is helping offset declining smokers in Western Europe and in Latin America and Canada.

The company bought Philippines company Fortune Tobacco Co. in February 2010, bolstering its Asian business.

Japan's earthquake and tsunami this March has also buffeted Philip Morris International's Asian sales. Supply disruptions stemming from the disaster at Japan Tobacco Inc., the world's No. 3 tobacco maker, has helped Philip Morris International increase market share in Japan. Shipments soared 47 percent in the third quarter.

The company also increased prices in Japan.

CFO Waldemer said that the company was able to keep its Japanese retail market share at 30 percent in September and early October, even after competitors' products were back on the market. Before the earthquake, Philip Morris International's share in Japan was about 26 percent.

"Japan has been an example of us seizing a business opportunity that presented itself in an optimal manner," Waldemer said.

Shipments also grew about 5 percent in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but fell 3.5 percent in the European Union and dropped about 1 percent in the Latin America and Canada region because of declines in Mexico.

Philip Morris International said its market share increased or remained stable in several key regions.

Smokers face tax hikes, bans, health concerns and social stigma worldwide, but the effect on cigarette demand generally is less stark outside the United States. Philip Morris International has compensated for volume declines in Western Europe and other important markets by raising prices and cutting costs. The company said it plans to exceed its targeted $250 million in cost cuts in 2011.

The weaker U.S. dollar also helped earnings. Philip Morris International sells all its goods overseas. Converting revenue in stronger foreign currencies back into the dollar gives a boost.

The company also said it spent $1.4 billion to buy back 21.2 million shares of stock in the quarter. That can lift earnings per share.

Philip Morris International, with offices in New York and in Lausanne, Switzerland, is the world's second-biggest cigarette company after the state-controlled China National Tobacco Corp.

Altria Group Inc. in Richmond, Va., the owner of Philip Morris USA, spun off Philip Morris International in 2008. Altria is the largest U.S. cigarette seller.

Apple blames iPhone rumors for disappointing results (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Apple Inc stunned Wall Street by reporting results that missed expectations for the first time in years, blaming rumors of the new iPhone for hurting demand in the September quarter.

Shares of Apple fell 7 percent in extended trading on Tuesday, wiping some $27 billion off the value of the world's largest technology company.

It was Apple's first quarterly earnings under Chief Executive Tim Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs in August at a critical juncture for the company. Apple is battling Google Inc in the mobile arena, as well as other challengers such as Samsung and Amazon.com Inc.

"Investors are going to start to speculate that there is change under way now that Jobs is gone, and that there's trouble ahead. We don't share that point," said Channing Smith, co-manager at Capital Advisors Growth Fund, which holds Apple shares.

"The iPhone is where the weakness was and it's an explainable one. The strong demand for the iPhone 4S set up strong demand for the holiday season."

Apple said it sold 17.07 million iPhones in its fiscal fourth quarter ended September 24 -- well short of the roughly 20 million forecast by analysts. The iPhone is Apple's flagship product, yielding some 40 percent of annual sales.

Revenue rose 39 percent to $28.27 billion, lower than the average analyst estimate of $29.69 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. It was the first time Apple missed revenue expectations since the fiscal fourth quarter of 2008.

Net profit was $6.62 billion, or $7.05 a share. That fell shy of expectations for earnings of $7.39 per share. The last time Apple missed EPS estimates was in the first quarter of 2001, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"Expectations for this company were red-hot, that is why we downgraded it," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis, who lowered his rating on the shares days before. "The reality is their business is not an annuity. They have to sell their quarter's worth of revenue every 90 days."

"They had a big upgrade cycle with the iPhone, the numbers came in weak. They need to set records every time they report to keep up the momentum."

Apple executives said consumers had postponed purchase decisions until the crucial holiday quarter because of speculation that a new phone was on the way. Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S in early October, and it hit stores last Friday.

Apple -- which typically offers projections so conservative they are disregarded -- on Tuesday forecast December quarter revenue and earnings above Wall Street's estimates.

"There's no question this was a transition quarter ahead of the 4S," said WP Stewart portfolio manager Michael Walker. "With the early pace of iPhone 4S sales, my guess is that disappointment is relatively short-lived."

"I'm not going to call Q3 a throwaway quarter for iPhones, but it was definitely a transition."

A PERIOD OF TRANSITION

Cook started his first earnings conference call as CEO by honoring Jobs, who died on October 5 after a years-long battle against pancreatic cancer.

He said he was "very confident" of posting record iPhone sales in the current quarter. The company moved 4 million iPhone 4S units -- more than double its predecessor -- in its first three days, despite lukewarm reviews.

Another area for optimism for Apple was iPads. The company moved 11.12 million units during the quarter despite attempts by various manufacturers, including Samsung, to capture a slice of the tablet market. Now Amazon.com has also entered the fray with its Kindle Fire tablet.

Acknowledging the competition, Cook said it was "reasonable to say" none of Apple's rivals have gained any traction, and he expected the tablet market to be bigger than personal computer in the long term.

Cook also told analysts that Greater China -- mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan -- was becoming an all-important region for Apple as it has "quickly become No. 2 on our list of top revenue countries very, very quickly." Revenue from the region increased four-fold to $4.5 billion during the quarter.

The new CEO fielded questions on Apple's cash pile of over $81 billion, saying the money provided flexibility for acquisitions and investing in the supply chain.

"That said, I'm not religious about holding cash or not holding it," he added. "It's a topic for the board on an ongoing basis."

Apple's Mac sales saw a large spike during the September quarter but it failed to lift earnings. Apple sold 4.89 million Macs, up 27 percent from a year ago.

Gross margin came to 40.3 percent -- a tad higher than Wall Street's forecast of 39.74 percent. International sales accounted for 63 percent of the quarter's revenue.

"We expected iPhone sales to decline in the September quarter from the June quarter as a result of the announcements we made ... in June, where we said we would launch iOS 5 and iCloud in fall," Peter Oppenheimer, Chief Financial Officer, said in an interview with Reuters.

"That basically created the rumor of the day across the September quarter, especially at the end."

Apple said it expected December quarter earnings of $9.30 a share on revenue of about $37 billion. Wall Street is projecting $9.01 for the period, but it was unclear if that was comparable.

"What is interesting is the guidance is less conservative than usual for their next quarter. It's a timing issue, where it looks like the business that people thought would be in the September quarter is occurring in the December quarter," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.

Apple shares fell to $394.78 in after-hours trading, after closing at $422.24 on the Nasdaq.

US should focus on Afghanistan, not Pakistan - army chief (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Pakistan's army chief told parliament's defence committee the United States should focus on stabilising Afghanistan instead of pushing Pakistan to attack militant groups in a crucial border region, a committee member told Reuters on Wednesday.

Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani's comments could deepen a crisis in relations between the United States and Pakistan, whose alliance is critical to efforts to stabilise Afghanistan before the end of 2014, when NATO combat troops are due home.

Kayani said Pakistan alone would decide if and when to launch a full-scale offensive in North Waziristan, which Western intelligence agencies say is a sanctuary for militants who cross the border to attack U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He also said the United States would have to think "10 times" before taking any unilateral action there. Pakistan is not like Iraq or Afghanistan, the parliamentarian quoted Kayani as saying, suggesting that any North Waziristan operation would be very risky.

The MP spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The problem lies in Afghanistan, not Pakistan," the parliamentarian quoted Kayani as telling the committee in a national security briefing at army headquarters.

The United States, the source of billions of dollars in aid, has urged Pakistan over the years to go after militant groups in North Waziristan, a rugged mountainous region where militants have forged ties with powerful tribes.

The pressure has become acute since U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden in May in a Pakistani garrison town where he had apparently been living for years.

The unilateral raid infuriated Pakistan's powerful military, which described it as a violation of sovereignty. In Washington, some angry officials wondered if elements of Pakistani intelligence had sheltered bin Laden.

Pakistan said it had no idea he was living in the town of Abbottabad, about a two-hour drive from the capital, Islamabad.

TAKE ACTION

Although ties have been severely damaged over the issue of militancy, few expect a complete rupture.

Pakistan's powerful military, which sets security and foreign policy, has been reluctant to attack North Waziristan, saying it was stretched fighting homegrown Taliban fighters elsewhere in Pakistan.

"If someone convinced me that all problems will be solved by taking action in North Waziristan, I'd do it tomorrow," the parliamentarian quoted Kayani as saying.

"If we need to take action, we will do it on our schedule and according to our capacity."

Admiral Mike Mullen said before retiring as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last month that the militant Haqqani group that attacked U.S. targets in Afghanistan was a "veritable arm" of Pakistan's spy agency, the Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence.

The remarks infuriated Pakistani leaders, who denied links to the group and said Pakistan had sacrificed more than any other country that joined the U.S. "war on terror" after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

"All intelligence agencies have contacts. Don't the CIA and (the British spy agency) MI6 have such contacts? It is through these contacts that we get information," the parliamentarian quoted Kayani as saying.

"The nice guys don't give you information. It is contacts like this that yield intelligence. It is about whether you use this information positively or negatively."

Analysts say Pakistan maintains ties with the al Qaeda-linked Haqqanis because it sees the group as a lever in Afghanistan, where rival India is vying for influence.

The Pakistani Taliban, who have ties to al Qaeda and Afghan Taliban factions, are blamed for many of the suicide bombings across unstable, nuclear-armed Pakistan.

On Tuesday, Pakistan's interior minister said the government would only hold peace talks with insurgents if they laid down their weapons first. Both sides earlier signalled a willingness to consider negotiations.

Past peace deals with the Taliban, which the United States has put on its list of foreign terrorist organisations, failed to improve security and instead enabled it to build up strength and impose its harsh version of Islam in areas ceded to it.

(AP) ? Libyan revolutionary forces have captured almost all of Bani Walid, one of Moammar Gadhafi's last remaining strongholds, but still face pockets of resistance as they try to end a weeks-long standoff, officials said Monday.

Fierce resistance in Bani Walid and Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte has prevented Libya's new leaders from declaring full victory and setting a timeline for elections. It has been more than two months since the former rebels gained control of the rest of the oil-rich North African nation.

In a step toward normalcy, the transitional leadership council confirmed it has signed an agreement with NATO that partially lifts the no-fly zone imposed in March over the country, allowing resumption of some flights without seeking NATO approval. The embargo was imposed as part of the U.N. Security Council resolution that authorized airstrikes to protect civilians from Gadhafi's regime.

Anwar Elfeitori, the minister of transportation and communications, said the agreement signed Thursday in Malta will make it easier to transport wounded fighters from the front lines for treatment.

"The partial lifting of the air embargo will help with the transportation of the casualties, which is the No. 1 priority at this time, as well as facilitate the movement of people between Libya and the rest of the world," Elfeitori told The Associated Press in an interview.

He said the agreement only applies to specific routes and altitudes for humanitarian flights but is designed so it can be amended to include other areas as security conditions allow.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the revolutionary council fighters are making progress. He called on pro-Gadhafi forces "to lay down their weapons and join the new Libya."

NATO officials have expressed surprise at the persistence of Gadhafi's supporters. Libyans believe the heavy resistance signals some of Gadhafi's sons and other high-level regime figures are hiding in the areas.

Fighters in Bani Walid, which has proven particularly hard to capture because of its difficult terrain, said they have entered the city center for the first time but still were fighting Gadhafi supporters in surrounding villages.

"We liberated the city around sunset on Sunday and raised the revolutionary flags all over the city," field commander Abdel-Salam Genouna told The Associated Press. He said fighters had occupied the central marketplace, the hospital, the hotel and an old fort that had all been used as bases for Gadhafi loyalists.

"We are patrolling the neighborhoods because there are still some scuffles, but otherwise it is completely under our control," he said, adding revolutionaries also had control of a steep valley called Wadi Zeitoun that had been a sniper base for Gadhafi's forces.

"Our forces are everywhere inside the city, and we are protecting the few families we found inside," he said.

He said fighters from Sabratha, Tripoli and Bani Walid were involved in the operation.

Col. Ahmed Bani, a military spokesman in Tripoli, said revolutionary forces had control over more than 90 percent of the city. He said revolutionary forces had suffered heavy casualties but declined to give a number.

Residents and fighters said that Gadhafi forces retreated in the face of the advance over the past two days.

Moammar al-Warfali, a doctor in Bani Walid, said fighters loyal to the new transitional government seized the center, a key hospital and several other high buildings used by Gadhafi's snipers to prevent any advance by the revolutionary fighters.

He also said Gadhafi's son Seif al-Islam had been seen in the city as recently as last week.

NATO has pledged to continue airstrikes for as long as necessary, saying pro-Gadhafi forces continue to pose a threat to civilians in Libya.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague also pledged more humanitarian and financial support Monday during a visit to Tripoli.

Gannett 3Q net income lower, matches Street views (AP)

NEW YORK ? Gannett Co., the publisher of USA Today and 81 other daily newspapers, posted a slight decline in its third-quarter net income Monday as advertising revenue fell.

The results matched Wall Street's expectations but were not enough to reassure investors. The company's stock dropped nearly 8 percent in midday trading after the earnings announcement.

"They made guidance, but there are issues with (the) drop in newspaper ads that's not getting any better," said Benchmark Co. analyst Edward Atorino.

Gannett earned $99.8 million, or 41 cents per share, in the July-September period. That's down nearly 2 percent from $101 million, or 42 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Excluding special items, such as restructuring charges related to job cuts, Gannett earned 44 cents per share, matching analysts' expectations. The company laid off 700 workers, or about 2 percent of its work force, in June due to the slump in advertising revenue at its newspapers.

Revenue fell nearly 4 percent to $1.27 billion from $1.31 billion, but it met the expectations of analysts polled by FactSet. Atorino said that "some favorable factors," such as a lower tax rate and slightly better-than-expected results in Gannett's digital operations, helped the company meet expectations. But newspaper advertising was worse than expected, he added.

The weak economy, coupled with an ongoing reader and advertiser migration to the Internet, has hurt ad revenue at newspapers. The results at Gannett, the first newspaper company to report earnings and a bellwether for the industry, pulled other newspaper stocks lower on Monday. The New York Times Co.'s shares fell more than 5 percent and McClatchy Co. dropped 3.6 percent.

For Gracia Martore, Gannett's new CEO, there were some signs for optimism. In a conference call with analysts, she said the company's earnings reflect the positive effect of Gannett's digital efforts and other initiatives. At the same time, she added that the results also show "the challenges of managing our businesses in the midst of a tremendous amount of economic uncertainty and a softening global economy."

Gannett named Martore as CEO earlier this month after Craig Dubow resigned for health reasons.

Martore said Gannett's digital revenue continued to show strength compared with a year earlier.

Revenue at Gannett's publishing segment, which includes its newspapers, declined 5 percent to $917.8 million from $969.4 million. The company had warned investors that advertising revenue in its newspaper division fell during the quarter, extending a decline that began in 2006.

The company said a decline in advertising at USA Today was partially offset by an increase in national advertising at its Newsquest division in the U.K.

Gannett, which owns 23 television stations, said its broadcasting revenue declined 6 percent to $174.3 million from $185.3 million in the year-ago quarter, which benefited from political advertising ahead of the midterm elections.

The company's CareerBuilder website helped push revenue at its digital division up 10 percent to $173.9 million. Across all of Gannett's digital properties, which include revenue generated by its newspaper websites, revenue also grew 10 percent, to $272.6 million.

Gannett's stock fell 78 cents, or 7.1 percent, to $10.16 in midday trading Monday, amid a broader market decline. The stock, which has traded in a 52-week range of $8.28 and 18.93, is down 33 percent since the beginning of the year, compared with a 3.9 percent decline for the Standard & Poor's 500 index.

Sarkozy challenger Hollande seen as soft, unifying (AP)

PARIS ? Francois Hollande is an affable and self-deprecating politician seen as a managerial consensus-builder, and a virtual unknown outside France ? and he could be its next president.

The 57-year-old won the Socialist Party's presidential nomination on Sunday, defeating party leader Martine Aubry and setting up a likely clash with conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy in next spring's election.

From the moderate wing of France's Socialist Party, the low-key Hollande is not obvious presidential material, yet opinion polls show him far more popular than the incumbent.

When asked "Why you?" in an interview published in Le Parisien newspaper Saturday, Hollande first answered: "Because I can beat Nicolas Sarkozy."

Hollande is a lawmaker in the National Assembly and the governor of the central Correze region ? the same political backyard as conservative former President Jacques Chirac ? and led the Socialist party from 1997 to 2008.

Critics say his resume is otherwise thin: He has never run a government ministry, has limited international recognition, and made his name as leader of a party that was weakened and badly fractured during his tenure.

As party leader, Hollande struggled to maintain party unity. He presided in 2002 when the Socialists' top national politician, Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, embarrassingly failed to qualify for the presidential runoff. The party split badly three years later over the proposed EU Constitution, which French voters rejected in a referendum.

Hollande's former partner Segolene Royal ? the mother of his four children ? was the Socialists' last presidential nominee. Their relationship unraveled during the 2007 campaign, and they later separated. She ran again this year, but lost badly in last Sunday's first phase of the Socialist primary.

Hollande wants more progressive tax rates. He sparked a political furor in the run-up to the 2007 election by advocating a tax hike for those French who earned more than euro4,000 ($5,500) a month.

"He must not like himself," Sarkozy quipped in a TV debate.

Hollande's program calls for more spending to reverse cuts in education by Sarkozy's government, a new work contract to encourage companies to hire young people, and focus on reducing France's high state budget deficit. It says little about international affairs, other than calling for an unspecified "pact" with Germany, the EU's economic engine, to spur on the now-troubled European project.

In 2008, Hollande openly supported Barack Obama's presidential candidacy, while admitting that such an endorsement could dent Obama's image in the U.S. electorate given the way some American voters regard socialism.

Hollande has a top-flight educational pedigree, with degrees from the reputed HEC business school, Sciences Po political institute, and the finishing school for French political and management elites known as ENA.

Hollande is seen mostly as a likable, intelligent, behind-the-scenes coordinator more than a party visionary or left-wing doctrinaire. In his early career, he staked out the party's moderate wing and was a protege of longtime European Commission chief Jacques Delors, who is also Aubry's father.

Hollande's strategy, in part, is to cast himself as the anti-Sarkozy. The macho president made his name as a hard-as-nails interior minister who led a crackdown on crime for much of the 2000s.

A popular French satirical TV show, Les Guignols de l'Info, once depicted Hollande's marionette as a flan with glasses. More recently, the show has pilloried him as a goofy simpleton with a dopey laugh ? a marked contrast to its scheming, self-important puppet of Sarkozy.

Political wags this year pointed to Hollande's weight loss and new use of frameless eyeglasses that coincided with his gradual rise in the polls ? as if the makeover helped his image.

Sarkozy and Hollande have squared off electorally before: Each led their party's list for the 1999 European parliament elections.

In a round-table debate ahead of that vote, Sarkozy and Hollande sparred. At one point Sarkozy quipped that his rival "is not an intimate friend, in any way ? notably because our political convictions are different."

Retorted Hollande, tartly: "And doesn't plan on becoming one."

Though turnout was dismal, the Socialists handily won that 1999 vote, and Sarkozy headed for a three-year spell in the political wilderness.
