Parade entry planned for those who served in military

Ashland woman hopes to honor men and women in uniform

Simone Coster is looking for men and women who have worn a military uniform or are still serving in the armed forces to march in Ashland's Independence Day parade.

Coster decided to obtain a parade entry for the 2012 annual Fourth of July parade after watching last year's entries and noticing there was little in it to honor veterans or those still in uniform.

"After last year's parade my mom and I started talking about the parade and why we celebrate the Fourth of July," Coster said.

"I grew up in Ashland," she added. "For the majority of my life, I've gone to every Fourth of July parade here. The parade has gotten very political."

Coster, 32, hopes her entry will simply remind parade watchers of the role veterans and those still serving play in American independence, she said.

"I thought it would be something unusual, honoring men and women in uniform," she said. "I also think it would be great if the town could thank them."

Many local residents want to show their appreciation for those who have served, said Coster who described herself as a homemaker and mother of two who is pregnant with her third child.

She has contacted the Oregon Army National Guard at the Ashland armory, which is expected to provide several vehicles and 15 citizen-soldiers for her entry.

Coster, whose grandfather served during World War II, hopes to have at least 40 participants for the event.

"I'm looking for any veterans (or service men and women) to walk in the parade or to ride in military vehicles," she said. "My goal is to just give the 'thank-you' they deserve for what they've done for all of us."

Any veteran or local person still in the military who wants to participate in her parade entry can reach her at 541-292-9020.

She doesn't plan to walk or ride in the entry.

"I want the focus to be on them and what they have done for us," she said.

Barclays to pay $450M-plus to settle LIBOR charges

Barclays PLC and its subsidiaries have agreed to pay more than $450 million to settle charges that it attempted to manipulate and made false reports related to setting key global interest rates.

The rates indirectly affect the costs of hundreds of trillions of dollars in loans that people pay when they get loans to go to school, purchase a car or buy a house.

Britain's Barclays was just one of numerous major banks reportedly under investigation for similar violations.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said Wednesday that the incidents occurred between 2005 and 2009 and sometimes took place daily. The $200 million civil penalty levied against Barclays as part of the settlement is the largest in the agency's history.

Barclays is also paying $160 million to the U.S. Justice Department and almost $93 million to British regulators.

The CFTC said Barclays senior management and multiple traders were involved in the matter and that they also coordinated with traders at other banks to make false submissions. The data was used in determining the London interbank offered rate ? known as LIBOR? and Euribor rates, which influence many other interest rates.

"Banks must not attempt to influence LIBOR or other indices based upon concerns about their reputation or the profitability of their trading positions," CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler said in a statement.

The LIBOR is an average rate set by banks each morning that measures how much they're going to charge each other for loans. That in turn affects the costs consumers pay for loans and investments.

Barclays also agreed to pay $160 million as part of an agreement with the fraud section of the Justice Department's criminal division on a related matter. The Justice Department said its related criminal investigation continues, and Barclays agreed to cooperate with that probe as part of its settlement.

Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer said that Barclays was the first bank to cooperate extensively with the investigation. Barclay's cooperation greatly helped the Justice Department in the probe, he said.

Britain's Financial Services Authority levied a fine of 59.5 million pounds ($92.7 million), the biggest fine ever imposed by the British regulator.

"Barclays' misconduct was serious, widespread and extended over a number of years," Tracey McDermott, acting director of enforcement and financial crime at the British agency, said in a statement. "The integrity of benchmark reference rates ... is of fundamental importance to both U.K. and international financial markets. Firms making submissions must not use those submissions as tools to promote their own interests."

Barclays President Bob Diamond also announced he and three senior bank executives were waiving any bonus for the year as a result of the case.

The other executives include Group Finance Director Chris Lucas, Chief Operating Officer Jerry del Missier and Chief Executive of Corporate and Investment Banking Rich Ricci.

US snowboarding halfpipe team leader Rick Bower named USOC Olympic Coach of the Year

June 23 - Rick Bower, the United States snowboarding halfpipe coach, has been named by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as the 2011 Olympic Coach of the Year at a special reception during the 2012 National Coaching Conference at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis.

During his six seasons as coach of the US snowboarding halfpipe team, Bower (pictured above, left) has played an integral role in advancing women's snowboarding.

Last year was arguably his finest in the role as he led his athletes to 31 major event podiums and took snowboarding to new heights after helping Kelly Clark (pictured above, right) become the first female to land a 1080 in competition.

This achievement, at the pinnacle of snowboarding events for the year, had a monumental influence on up-and-coming female athletes and the progression of women's snowboarding.

For his efforts, Bower was also recognised as the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) International Coach of the Year and USSA International Snowboarding Coach of the Year in 2011.

He was one of five coaches to be honoured by the USOC during the 2012 National Coaching Conference.

Paralympic Coach of the Year went to swimming coach Dave Denniston, Developmental Coach of the Year to judo coach James Hrbek, Volunteer Coach of the Year to rugby coach Tom Waga and the Doc Counsilman Science Award to Neal Henderson (pictured below) for applying scientific principles in the laboratory and on the field to improve athlete performance in cycling.

"These five coaches have impacted countless athletes throughout their exemplary careers," said Alan Ashley, the USOC chief of sport performance.

"They are shining examples of the team behind the team and their efforts have encouraged athletes of all levels to strive for excellence."

The five coaches were honoured after the National Governing Bodies selected their 2011 Coaches of the Year as part of the USOC Coach of the Year Recognition Programme.

The three finalists in each category were then chosen by a panel of coaching and sport education professionals before a single coach in each category received the award.

Ousted Paraguay leader accuses lawmakers of 'coup'

Paraguay's ousted leader Fernando Lugo on Sunday accused lawmakers of carrying out a "parliamentary coup d'etat" to force him from power, as international protests mounted over his abrupt removal.

In his first public appearance since his impeachment on Friday over a deadly land dispute earlier this month, Lugo again blasted Congress for its snap decision but said he would nevertheless accept it in the name of peace.

"Lugo has not been dismissed; democracy has been dismissed. They have not respected the popular will," the ousted leader said in an unexpected appearance at a street protest attended by about 500 people in the capital Asuncion.

He called his impeachment "unjust" and called for "peaceful" demonstrations in the impoverished, landlocked South American nation.

"There was a parliamentary coup d'etat... the arguments for impeachment had no value," the 61-year-old former leader said after entering the studio of TV Publica, scene of the protest, for a brief news conference.

In a 39-4 vote, lawmakers on Friday found Lugo guilty of performing his duties badly during the armed clash on June 15 that claimed the lives of six police and 11 squatters on a privately-held farm.

His vice president Federico Franco was quickly sworn in to cheers in the Congress as Paraguay's new leader.

Lugo acknowledged that it would be "very difficult" to return in power, but said there should be no more violence, adding: "Peacefully, the democratic process will continue, with more strength."

Franco on Saturday told AFP in an interview in his office that he hoped Lugo would help him stem the international outcry over the change in power.

"Right now I'm trying to speak with president Lugo. I'm going to do it. I think his presence as a Paraguayan is very important to give an international image, because right now we need a legally constituted government," he said.

Franco said he planned to ask Lugo "to help us prevent Paraguay from receiving an absolutely unjust, unnecessary and unpopular punishment."

No foreign government has recognized Paraguay's new leadership.

Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay -- Paraguay's partners in the Mercosur trading bloc -- recalled their ambassadors for consultations.

The secretary general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, called the snap impeachment a "disrespect to due process."

Insulza said the Americas had once again witnessed "a summary judgment that, while formally in keeping with the law, did not appear to fulfill all the legal precepts of the right to a legitimate defense."

Franco, who served as Lugo's vice president, earlier defended the ouster of his predecessor as being in compliance with the country's constitution, and he insisted "there was no coup."

"There are no soldiers in the street," he added.

But he acknowledged he was concerned about the international reaction.

"We will make our best efforts to get in touch with neighboring countries to try to demonstrate our clear commitment to democracy," he said.

Franco met earlier with the Vatican's envoy Agustin Arietti, and with the German ambassador Dirk Niebel, who said Berlin viewed the ouster as "a normal change of government, not by means of elections, but a normal process."

Lugo's lawyers had just two hours to present their case on his behalf in the Senate impeachment trial.

The torrent of furious responses to the ouster came not just from traditional leftist allies like Bolivia, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner took to her Twitter account to repeat that "Argentina will not validate the coup in Paraguay."

"It's a travesty of justice and an affront to the rule of law to remove a president in 24 hours, with no guarantees to defend himself," the executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Santiago Canton, told a press conference.

The first major international event the new government had been expected to attend is a Mercosur summit in Argentina on Thursday and Friday.

But Franco told AFP he would not go if his presence would make matters worse.

Peru said it had offered to host a presidential summit of Mercosur leaders next week to assess the situation in Paraguay.

Brazil said members of Mercosur and Unasur, another regional bloc, were considering what measures should be applied to Paraguay in light of the developments.

Franco noted that any blockade of Paraguay would hurt Brazilian entrepreneurs, who have major interests in the country. Sixty percent of Paraguay's trade is with Brazil.

"Late Show" host David Letterman let Justin Bieber know just what he thought of his new tattoo on Thursday night's show.

Thursday night turned out to be a tough one for teen idol Justin Bieber when an appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman" went from all fun to a little physical.

Shortly before Bieber's visit, he decided to mark the release of his new album, "Believe," by marking his skin with a new tattoo. Letterman, who's no fan of body art, wasn't impressed.

"Oh, God! How many do you have?" the host asked.

"I have ? just a couple," the mellow teen responded.

The answer didn't satisfy Letterman, who then took a more parental approach.

"Well, tell me that's the last one," he urged.

Bieber hedged, and after a bit more back and forth, Letterman lunged.

Yes, while still grumbling about the ink ("Get that off!"), the veteran late-night talker suddenly grabbed Bieber by the arm and started rubbing the offending tat.

Once the quick tussle was over, Letterman asked Bieber for a commitment to at least slow down with the body art and to just consider how many people choose to cover their arms in "murals -- like the Sistine Chapel."

The news about a scan that can diagnose Alzheimer?s disease before death is awesome news for those who may wonder if a loved one has the disease. This is a welcome relief for some but with the news brings ethical and emotional consequences too.

Would you have the scan to discover if you had the disease, especially since it is a disease that has no cure? That will be the ethical question that some will raise. There are many sides to the new scan becoming available. The cost and who will cover it, the affects on employment for those with a positive scan, the fear of the unknown and what is to come, and where the test will be available and to whom are all questions that come to mind.

The fact the research has come this far that a diagnosis may be available to the general public is medical progress at it?s best. Time will tell who, what, where, and how but for now I am glad that medical research is making the hope of diagnosis a reality for some. May a cure not be far behind.

Samsung SE-218BB Ultrathin Optical Disc Drive

With the rise of ultrabooks, the internal optical drive is no longer the mainstay it once was. So should disc devotees sacrifice their beloved CDs and DVDs or remain mired in the past? Lucky for them, few portable optical drives solve this conundrum with as much panache as the Samsung SE-218BB Ultrathin Optical Disc Drive ($59.99 list). Not only does its attractive, svelte design mirror the ultrabook aesthetic, it also eschews the cumbersome Y connector typical of portable optical drives and boasts quick, quiet performance. Although the SE-218BB doesn't offer Blu-ray compatibility like the Editors' Choice?winning Pioneer BDR-XD04 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars), it does what it's supposed to, and looks good in the process.

Design and Features

Samsung touts the SE-218BB as the world's thinnest portable optical drive, and there's little reason for us to doubt that claim. Measuring by 0.55 by 5.75 by 5.5 inches (HWD) and weighing just under nine ounces, the SE-218BB is markedly slimmer than the HP dvd550s ($69.99 direct, 3 stars) and can fit easily into any laptop bag. It has a super-thin black plastic chassis and faux?brushed aluminum lid embossed with a Samsung logo that thankfully does little to detract from the device's elegant, subdued look. Like the HP dvd550s and the Lite-On eNAU708 ($39.99 list, 3.5 stars), the SE-218BB is intended for horizontal placement and sports a tray-loading design.

Another attribute of the SE-218BB is the fact that it uses a standard USB 2.0 cable instead of the Y connector most portable optical drives employ. This is a huge plus as the lengths of each strand in Y connectors tend to be unevenly distributed, which can make it difficult to conveniently position the drive near your system. Because the included cable can easily be replaced with a longer one, this potential headache is sidestepped entirely.

Unlike the HP dvd550s or the HP dvd560s ($70 street, 3 stars), the SE-218BB is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. A caveat, however: The included software applications (Nero 10 Multimedia Suite Essentials, and Cyberlink's PowerDVD and PowerDirector) only work with Windows, so Mac owners will need to use a different utility to read and write discs.

Performance

The SE-218BB doesn't just look good?it also performs well. During testing, it emitted minimal noise beyond the sound of the spinning disc. Moreover, the four rubberized feet on the drive's underside adeptly absorb vibrations, resulting in a drive that will remain inconspicuous even when you're out and about. The SE-218BB also remained cool throughout testing; during software installation, its temperature hovered around 83 degrees Fahrenheit (as measured with a Fluke IR thermometer), and even when burning DVDs it stayed at about 85 degrees. I encountered no problems during multimedia playing and burning. (Samsung advertises write speeds ranging from 6X for dual-layer DVDs to 24X for CD-RWs.)

One shortcoming with the drive may affect some users. Samsung claims that the SE-218BB supports USB-equipped Android tablets that run on Honeycomb 3.1 or later, a group limited to the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet, Asus Transformer, and Acer Iconia. When I attempted to test the SE-218BB with the last the tablet failed to recognize the drive, both in and out of AV mode (achieved by holding the eject button when the tray is open). Ultimately, this is a minor hiccup, as the SE-218BB is geared mainly toward the ultrabook crowd, but it's worth noting.

If there were a yearbook for portable optical drives, the Samsung SE-218BB Ultrathin Portable DVD Writer would easily be voted "best dressed" in its class, thanks to its attractive, slender design. But would it also be named "most likely to succeed"? For those unconcerned with Blu-ray functionality, the answer is an unequivocal yes. It performs well, eliminates the cumbersome Y connector from the picture, and is compatible with both Windows and Mac?all for a reasonable price. On the other hand, if purchasing a future-proofed drive is paramount for you, the lack of Blu-ray functionality seals the SE-218BB's fate. We tend to fall in the latter camp, so the Editors' Choice Pioneer BDR-XD04 remains the portable drive to beat. That said, for those simply looking to add DVD functionality to their ultrabooks, the SE-218BB stands near the top of the heap.

Government: Apple's trying to rush antitrust case

NEW YORK (AP) ? The U.S. government says Apple Inc. wants to rush its New York antitrust lawsuit over the price of electronic books by finishing evidence gathering by year's end, and the electronics king acknowledges it has a "special urgency" in ending the case.

The government said in a letter filed in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday that it wants until March to finish gathering facts in a lawsuit it brought this year.

The government sued this year, joining 15 states in saying Apple and several publishers conspired in the fall of 2009 to force e-book prices several dollars above the $9.99 charged by Amazon.com on its popular Kindle device.

Government lawyers told a judge there is much to be learned about the scope and identity of individuals who participated in a conspiracy between publishers and Apple to set book prices.

They said they were trying to reveal "a long-running, detailed conspiracy that affected millions of U.S. consumers and likely involved multiple executives at each co-conspirator. Some of the acts in furtherance of the conspiracy occurred in Europe, where the defendants also pursued a similar course of conduct aimed at European consumers."

The lawyers said time was required to sort out what happened and "bring the full course of the defendants' conduct to light."

In its own letter, Apple said its approach reflects a "special urgency" in resolving the case because of public interests at stake and to vindicate its conduct. It repeated its "unequivocal position: it believes it has done nothing wrong and seeks a speedy resolution of the Department of Justice's lawsuit on the merits."

"It is also a reality that the mere existence of litigation of this type creates marketplace uncertainties, which impact competitive conditions and the public interest," it said.

A hearing in the case was set for Friday.

(CNN) -- Attackers in Afghan police uniforms gunned down a member of NATO's peacekeeping force in southern Afghanistan on Monday, the allied command in Kabul reported.

The International Security Assistance Force said the three gunmen "immediately fled the area and are currently being sought."

No other details were released by NATO, but a U.S. official in Washington told CNN the fatality was an American and that as many as eight or nine others were wounded.

Uniformed Afghans -- either insurgents in disguise, or members of the country's police or military -- have been behind numerous killings of U.S. and NATO troops this year. The incidents have fueled mutual distrust between Afghan and NATO forces in the now-decade-old conflict.

Personal Best: Sold on the Feeling, if Not the Benefits to Health

Almost everyone has gotten the message that exercise is important for health. Yet most who start exercise programs stop. Perhaps, researchers say, the way to persuade more people to exercise is to study those rare individuals who love it.

What makes someone a committed exerciser? And how motivating are the much vaunted improvements to health?

Recently these questions have became more urgent. This month, a group of exercise researchers published an analysis of five rigorous studies reporting that about 10 percent of people have an ?adverse response? to exercise. In them, at least one cardiovascular risk factor got worse instead of better.

Some exercise and public health experts worried that people might use the findings as an excuse not to exercise. But that assumes that exercisers are motivated largely by health concerns to begin with.

?When a physician tells a patient, ?You need to make a change for your health,? that can be motivating, especially if the person has a health problem,? said Rodney Dishman, director of the exercise psychology laboratory at the University of Georgia. ?But it usually wanes over time. People don?t feel their bones getting stronger, they don?t feel lipids changing, they don?t feel their blood pressure changing.?

Most who start exercising say the goal is to lose weight or improve their health. But those who begin on the promise of imperceptible health effects often stop, Dr. Dishman said, saying they do not have time, or are too tired after work, or they just lost interest.

And there are no good studies investigating why people keep exercising. Dr. Dishman and others suspect the motivation is sheer pleasure ? feeling energized, a boost in mood, feeling restless and uncomfortable without exercise. And you may not be able to will yourself to have this response.

Biological traits, Dr. Dishman says, ?seem to play a bigger role in both the choice to be active and the outcomes of being active than folks ? namely public health advocates? have been willing to admit.?

Dr. Dishman cites himself as an example of someone who craves exercise. Until about five years ago, he was an avid runner. Then his knee failed him ? severe osteoarthritis ? and he has not been able to run since. He still has dreams that he is running.

But instead of giving up on exercise, he rides a stationary bike simply because working out feels so good to him.

?If I can feel better after 30 minutes of riding in my office, alone, going nowhere, it has got to be something about exercise,? he said. But for him, as for many others, slow, moderate exercise does not bring the same physical pleasure. It must be hard exercise, meaning it has to require real effort, the sort of workout that makes people breathe hard and drip with sweat, Dr. Dishman says.

Many scientists and doctors who are avid exercisers ? and who know and understand the medical science ? say they were never motivated by the thought of improving their heart risk factors.

Barry Zirkin, a reproductive biologist at Johns Hopkins University?s Bloomberg School of Public Health, craves his sport ? basketball ? to the point that three partial tears in each Achilles? tendon did not keep him from it.

His orthopedist told him to stop. ?He knew I wouldn?t stop,? Dr. Zirkin said. ?And I haven?t.?

?I almost define a part of me by that game,? Dr. Zirkin added. ?Actually, I do define a part of me by the jock part. It?s ridiculous, I know. But it is what it is.?

Dr. Christine Lawless, a chairwoman of the American College of Cardiology?s Sports and Exercise Cardiology Council, was a competitive figure skater until she was in her late 40s. She was motivated by competition, by wanting to win.

Then she broke her left leg during a bad jump. She could not exercise for six months.

?I was so depressed,? Dr. Lawless said. ?I knew I wasn?t going to skate again. I really had to change my mindset. I had to think about other ways to motivate myself.?

Dr. Lawless, who is now 59, exercises for about an hour a day five days a week, through yoga and walking and lifting weights. She says her motivation now is a desire to stay active and flexible for the rest of her life. But for her, like Dr. Dishman and Dr. Zirkin, exercise also is an innate pleasure, important to her sense of well-being.

?I feel like I haven?t had a good day unless I exercise,? Dr. Lawless said.

Perhaps it is wrong to think that the way to encourage people to exercise is to emphasize the benefits to their health, Dr. Dishman said. But what about a medical scientist who actually has heart disease? Would an adverse exercise response make a difference?

That?s him, says Dr. Robert Green of Harvard Medical School. He used to run, but eventually his joints could not take it. So he rides a bicycle and swims instead.

Adverse effects, he said, would not deter him. What does it actually mean to say your blood pressure goes up by a few points with exercise, he asks. There are no data on long-term health effects, like heart attacks and strokes, in exercisers who have adverse responses.

So he simply does not care. Exercise makes him feel good. And if he were to have an adverse effect, like a rise in blood pressure?

?I?d keep exercising.?

LG Optimus 4X HD hands-on and initial review

When I first opened the box for the LG Optimus 4X HD, the words "wow" came out of my mouth. It's 4.7-inches of sexy, iconic LG style, in white, and that's a good way to get me hooked. We had an earlier look at the 4X HD at CES in 'Nawlins, and walked away impressed with what LG was showing us with both the new hardware and software. The 4X HD is a beauty, and built like a tank. 

The specs are at the top of the heap, with it's 4.7-inch IPS HD display at 720p (and it's stunning), a Tegra 3 and 1GB of RAM under the hood, NFC, Gorilla Glass, removable 2150 mAh battery, and micro SD card slot. It rivals the HTC One X in the screen quality department, and at this early stage I'm not sure which is better -- they are both that good. The software's no slouch either, with Android 4.0.3 and LG's newest iteration of the Optimus UI, which is a vast improvement from what we've seen with older models.

What really got me excited was in the settings. We see many really cool phones from players like LG, that are destined never to come to the United States. While we can't say for sure that we'll see this one on our side of the pond, we can say LG has built US English into the firmware. That means it is ready to go with a dictionary, display language, date, time, currency, everything is set up for use inside the US. That's something we don't usually see in phones solely for Europe or Asia, and I think it's a good sign.

I'm going to give the 4X HD a run for a bit and let you know what I think after it's all said and done. In the meantime, hit the break for some video and pictures.

3 Reported Dead In University Of Alberta Shooting

Three employees of an armoured vehicle company were killed and a fourth taken to hospital after a shooting at the University of Alberta's HUB Mall campus in Edmonton, several media report.

The Edmonton Journal said police have confirmed the victims worked for the same company and were gunned down early Friday at the HUB Mall, a combined shopping centre and student residence. Two men and a woman were killed; another man is in hospital in critical condition.

Police did not name the company.

Police spokesman Scott Pattison said it was an attempted armed robbery of one or more amoured vehicles in the Hub Mall area. He would not confirm reports that the dead are two men and a woman and were employees of an armoured vehicle company. Pattison said Hub Mall has been locked down, adding no students were involved.

More than two dozen marked and unmarked police cars responded to the scene, Global Edmonton reports.

Ravedh Seeberath told CBC News he was studying when he heard the sound of fireworks.

The shooter is still at large, 630 CHED radio reports.

According to Messina, Jobs talked a lot about how the world had changed since Obama?s re-election. Back in 2008, the iPhone had just started to revolutionize the way we think of mobile, but hadn?t really gained much momentum yet.

Now, everyone has iPhones and iPads, and according to Jobs, the key to re-election was to make use of them.

Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube, Google ? because people are segmented in a very different way than they were four years ago.?

In other words, Jobs told Messina that Obama should be using smartphones and tablets as his tools for going viral. It?s an astute point, and whether you like Obama or not, it looks as if part of the credit for an Obama victory can be given posthumously to Jobs.

Around the same time LinkedIn confirmed reports that user passwords had been compromised, and urged users to update their passwords, the email phishing attacks began.

On Wednesday, security firms reported that approximately 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords were posted to a Russian hacker website, along with at least 1.5 million passwords belonging to eHarmony members. On Thursday, Internet radio website Last.fm reported that passwords for its site had been compromised as well. All three sites urged users to update their passwords immediately, which unfortunately creates ?a prime atmosphere of panic?for the right phishing scam. ?

Emails claiming to come directly from LinkedIn asked recipients to click or cut-and-paste an enclosed url in their Internet browser to confirm their email address, which several digital security firms have identified as scams.

"We are investigating the exact details but in the meantime please DO NOT CLICK on links in email to change or verify account information, at LinkedIn.com or on any other membership site," warned Cameron Camp, security researcher at ESET. "Instead, navigate to the site directly by typing in the address bar in your browser."

In the emails reviewed by ESET, the link that reads "Click here to confirm your email address" leads to an illegal online pharmacy.

Scammers often take advantage of headline-grabbing news to trick people into clicking a link both via emails and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Such scams can trick victims into visiting websites, providing access to online accounts or downloading viruses to their computers.

When exactly the LinkedIn email phishing scam started is not clear. "Because similar emails have been circulating for some time it is hard to say if this is an example of a coordinated scam designed to leverage the security breach made public today, or simply a coincidence (like getting a phishing email asking you to reset your Bank of America online banking password two days after you opened an account there)," Camp wrote on the ESET blog.

As with the phishing emails claiming to be from LinkedIn, be on the lookout for similar emails demanding confirmations and changes on your eHarmony and Last.fm accounts.
