The news about a scan that can diagnose Alzheimer?s disease before death is awesome news for those who may wonder if a loved one has the disease. This is a welcome relief for some but with the news brings ethical and emotional consequences too.
Would you have the scan to discover if you had the disease, especially since it is a disease that has no cure? That will be the ethical question that some will raise. On the other hand, if you or a family member had odd symptoms that might be early signs of Alzheimer?s disease I can see the benefits of knowing ?for sure. ?Benefits include planning for your estate, keeping active and being proactive with possible clinical trials, mind exercises, and other possible adjuncts that could prolong the deterioration that Alzheimer?s brings.
There are many sides to the new scan becoming available. The cost and who will cover it, the affects on employment for those with a positive scan, the fear of the unknown and what is to come, and where the test will be available and to whom are all questions that come to mind.
The fact the research has come this far that a diagnosis may be available to the general public is medical progress at it?s best. Time will tell who, what, where, and how but for now I am glad that medical research is making the hope of diagnosis a reality for some. May a cure not be far behind.
