The Georgia Legislature voted to abolish the energy tax in order to be more competitive in luring big industries to Georgia since Florida, Alabama and South Carolina do not currently have an energy tax.  / Ashley Knight
ALBANY, GA -- Commissioners from both the city and county met to discuss an excise tax that would reinstate a 2% tax on manufacturers of energy after the energy tax is phased out.
The Georgia Legislature voted to abolish the energy tax in order to be more competitive in luring big industries to Georgia since Florida, Alabama and South Carolina do not currently have an energy tax.
Industries were being taxed 7% for energy consumption--4% of that was going to state tax. Imposing an excise tax would restore 2% of that lost revenue. The tax would be a county tax and, if adopted, the city would have the opportunity to enter into an intergovernmental agreement and receive a portion of that revenue. Commissioners will have 30 days to form a decision.
Spokesperson for Proctor and Gamble, Vince Falcione says they appreciate local commissioners supporting the abolishment of the energy tax, meanwhile they understand local leaders must do what's best for the county and the area.
