And the winner is ... the Wilson's Pharlarope. Females in this species of shorebird show up at breeding grounds first and puff up their feathers to lure in mates. Once they snag a guy, they defend him zealously, protecting a territory around the nest where he cares for their babies.
Best Picture
The most prestigious award of the bunch goes to the creature that's provided the wildest story of the year.
Nominees: Zombie ants, who capitalize on zombie-mania when attacked by a mind-controlling fungus ; the glowing millipedes of the genus Mytoxia, who sweat cyanide to ward off predators; and the Cyclops shark, a malformed dusky fetus whose look mixes grotesque and cute in equal measure.
And the winner is ... the Cyclops shark. Millipedes and ants are forever, but this weird fetus is one-of-a-kind, or at least very rare. Considering that the fetal shark is very unlikely to have survived outside the womb, the least we can do is offer it a nice posthumous statuette ? and, of course, the obligatory Academy Award memorial reel.

Small, Phase I combo trial suggests 3-year overall survival in men ...
A media release issued earlier today by Barvarian Nordic (the developer of Prostvac?) gives us an inkling of where we may be headed in the development of combination therapies for the management of late stage (and maybe even earlier stage) forms of prostate cancer.
The media release comments briefly on research published on line by Madan et al. in The Lancet Oncology.
Madan et al. report data from a small, Phase I, dose-escalation trial designed to test the safety and the tolerability of a fixed dose of Barvarian Nordic?s poxvirus-based Prostvac immunotherapeutic vaccine in combination with gradually escalating doses of? ipilimumab, another immunotherapeutic agent. Both agents are currently in pivotal Phase III trials as single agents for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), and ipilimumab (Yervoy?) has already been approved in the US as a treatment for metastatic melanoma.
In the current trial, men with mCRPC were given a subcutaneous injection with? 2 ? 108 plaque-forming units of Prostvac on day 1 of cycle 1 and then with monthly injections of 1 ? 109 plaque-forming units of Prostvac, starting on day 15. They were also treated with escalating doses of ipilimumab, given intravenously, once monthly, starting at day 15, using doses of 1, 3, 5, and 10 mg/kg. Additional details about the trial are available on the ClinicalTrials.gov web site.
Here are the core findings from this study to date:
- The trial enrolled 30 men with mCRPC
- 24/30 patients (80 percent) were chemotherapy-naive.
- No dose-limiting toxic effects were evident.
- Vaccination-site reactions were the most common toxic effects.
- 3/30 patients (10 percent) had grade 1 vaccination reactions.
- 26/30 patients (87 percent) had grade 2 vaccination reactions.
- 21 patients had grade 2 or greater immune-related adverse events.
- Grade 3 or 4 immune-related adverse events included
- Diarrhea or colitis (in 4 patients)
- Grade 3 rash (in 2 patients)
- Grade 3 raised aminotransferase levels (2 patients)
- Grade 3 endocrine immune-related adverse events (2 patients)
- Grade 4 neutropenia (1 patient).
- Among the patients previously treated with chemotherapy, 1/6 (17 percent) had a PSA decline from baseline.
- Among the patients who were chemotherapy-naive, 14/24 (58 percent) had PSA declines from baseline
- 6/24 chemotherapy-naive patients (25 percent) had PSA declines from baseline that were > 50 percent.
However, even though this trial was not intended to assess effectiveness of therapy, the median overall survival of the patients in this study was 34.4 months (nearly 3 years). We have no way yet of knowing the implications of this overall survival period of these patients in this small study. What we do know, however, is that median overall survival of men with mCRPC in other Phase III studies of late-stage disease have been more like 15 to 25 months (depending on the study and the precise patient enrollment criteria).
It is much too early to know whether Prostvac alone, ipilimumab alone, or the combination of these two agents can really demonstrate a median overall survival of about 3 years in men with chemotherapy-naive mCRPC, but these data are certainly enough to stimulate the imagination.

Franc farewell: France bids adieu to old currency

Six centuries after the first one was minted and a decade after they went out of circulation, the last French francs are being exchanged for euros, severing France's final link to its former national currency.
The Banque de France set a deadline of the close of business Friday for French savers to exchange whatever leftover franc notes they've kept socked away in drawers or under mattresses, whether held onto intentionally as souvenirs or simply forgotten about.
The euro replaced the franc in wallets and purses in January 2002, but the central bank has continued to accept francs in exchange for euros until now.
The franc's end comes as the euro suffers the worst crisis since its creation, and the once-taboo question of a eurozone break-up is now front page fodder.
A report in London's Daily Telegraph said large lines formed outside banks as customers carrying plastic bags full of old notes waited to exchange old money.
The report said there were an estimated 50m franc notes still in circulation at the end of last year. The French Government predicts that ?100m worth of these notes - around a fifth - will not be exchanged, having been lost or squirrelled away as souvenirs.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood last week told POLITICO that the House transportation bill is ?the worst? measure he?s ever seen ?during 35 years of public service.?

If the administration didn?t want to grapple with the political risk of raising gas tax revenues three years ago, it had to expect that the things that it favors but others don?t value ? like transit ? could get the ax. And if there?s one thing the House bill makes clear, it?s that not everyone shares the Obama administration?s urban transportation priorities.
No wonder. LaHood and President Barack Obama have been terrible ambassadors for their urban transportation visions. Unlike previous transportation secretaries, who discreetly played politics, LaHood has acted like a big-city mayor, not the head of a national agency. He has constantly advocated urban-friendly transport modes like mass transit.
LaHood, in one of his first moves, announced that highway spending should be ?balanced? with spending on transit, walking and biking projects. In other words, take money from highway projects.

David Tarkington: Orphans, Adoption, and Fostering. . . Not An ...
Over the past few months, God has been revealing to me and our leadership team His plans for our church to enter into a story already being written. This story involves something that for many has been reserved as a "private matter." It's something that some have a difficult time understanding why the church would be involved.
It has to do with children. Most churches are very positive toward children. We promote "family friendly" activities, events and ministries. Many have distinct children's ministries that feature camps, children's church and the mainstay of Baptist life - Vacation Bible School.
It's not that we do not love children. In fact, we do. It's just that there is a group of children in our community and throughout the world that we often do not talk about. These are the children living in orphanages and foster homes.
The question we are asking is "What is the church to do?"
?
I am convinced that God desires us not to simply give an offering a couple of times a year for orphan care (though we will continue to give financially.) I am saddened that many churches have left care for children in our society up to governmental agencies.

Why is it that we allow the Angelina Jolie's of the world to be the image of adoption? Isn't adoption and rescuing children a mandate for the church?
Many in our tribe are pro-life, as we are. We are adamently opposed to abortion, feeling that life begins at conception. However, beyond protesting abortion and advocating for the unborn, what do we do for those who have been born, but have no home? What about the child who is put up for adoption? What about the child that is in need of a safe home for a season, or a foster family?
Why does it seem that, for the most part, the church is satisfied with leaving orphan care and adoption up to others??
I read this verse recently while studying. I had read it before, but this time it really struck a chord. God spoke through His Word to me when reading this verse and it was very clear.?

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.?
Pure and undefiled religion. Now that's religion that God loves. Notice that the first item listed has to do with orphans. Visiting orphans. That is not all, there is also listed the ministry to widows and ultimately remaining unstained from the sin of the world (i.e. in the world, but not of it.)
If our commission as Christ-followers is to share the Gospel and make disciples, then wouldn't it make sense for Christians to be heavily involved in the ministry of adopting children who need homes. To rescue children and bring them to Christ is a worthy undertaking.?
I'm not sure how this will look for First Baptist Church, but I do know that we will be "all in." I see a day when there are no children in need of adoption in our county. Why? Because Christ-following families will rescue these children and bring them into their homes. Men and women will become "Mom and Dad" for children who have never known such a relationshiop. Some will experience the love of Christ through a family that heretofore they have never known.
In talking with our friends at the Florida Baptist Children's Homes, this step is vitally needed in our area.
So, the ball is rolling now. Steps are being taken. We will not rush in unprepared. . .but we will rush in.?
Why? Because we must.
Is it any different for believers in our culture to ignore the needs (phsyical, emotional, mental AND spiritual) of children and allow others to deal with it than what the Jewish people did in the Old Testament when they offered up children to false gods such as Molech? That may be an extreme comparison and will probably offend some, but in truth, there's not much difference.?
We, the called out ones, the rescued, the ransomed hearts, the children of God are to offer pure and undefiled worship to the Father. To ignore this aspect (and no, it's not the only one) eliminates our worship from being as pure as it could be.
What will this look like? I'm not sure, but here are some ideas:
- We will offer regularly scheduled MAPP classes here at the church (Apparently, these will soon be called PRIDE classes, but are the same thing. Required by the state in order to adopt.)
- We will offer connection groups for families wishing to adopt or foster children. This will enable couples to talk with and get answers about difficult questions from others who have previously gone through the process.
- We will upgrade and enhance our preschool and children's ministries to be more "user friendly" for families with foster children or children through the Safe Families program.
- We will offer training and information for any wishing to adopt or foster children.?
- We will educate church members about this mission and even those who cannot adopt of foster will be invited into the story. Every Christ-follower can be an advocate.
- Hopefully, through partnerships with other ministries, we will be able to offer scholarships or donations for families wishing to adopt. (This will be a huge faith step and maintained by an off site ministry.)
- International adoption will be an option and we want to help in the process. Whether this is through the China Nest of Hope or our mission in Haiti or some other location, we will offer step-by-step information on how, why, and what needs to be done.
- We will celebrate births of babies in our church family. We will celebrate the adoption of babies into families (regardless the age of the child.)
- We will be more involved in orphan care through the Children's Home here in Jacksonville as well as international orphanages.
- We will be an advocate for special needs adoptions.
- We will be an advocate for multi-racial adoptions.
- Etc. (This covers all the many things we haven't even thought of, but God already has in the works.)
We understand that adopting or fostering a child doesn't make a person a "super Christian." We do believe, however, that all believers can be involved in this mission. It's not a new mission. It's living the Gospel where God has placed us.

Harwich has played a very important role in Britain?s nautical history for centuries ? it was particularly appreciated in the 19th century by captains sailing ships looking for shelter.
In the second half of the 19th century, the Great Eastern Railway Company decided that the port should be transformed - this is how the world-class deep-water facility, Harwich International Port, came about.
Following the port?s success, Great Eastern Railway wanted to expand its operations further ? so created a whole new port on the marshland of Ray Island.
The new port, Parkeston Quay, was officially opened in 1883 by Charles H. Parkes, Chairman of the Great Eastern Railway Company. Soon after, it became one of Britain?s most important passenger ports ? as it links England with Belgium and the Netherlands.Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, Harwich Port has kept its close connections with Europe.

A look into the historic town?
Historically important, as well as being one of the UK?s most deep-water harbours, the old town of Harwich is a conservation area ? it is here you will find a whole host of historic buildings, each with a tale to tell. Highly regarded for its architectural heritage, you?ll discover many notable public buildings, including the parish church of St. Nicholas (1821) and the Guildhall of 1769, the only Grade I listed building in Harwich. On the quayside, the Pier Hotel of 1860 and Great Eastern Hotel of 1864 can be seen. These two buildings reflect the town?s new found importance to those travelling - thanks to the arrival of the railway line from Colchester in 1854.
Other places of interest include the High Lighthouse, the Treadwheel Crane and the Electric Palace Cinema. One of the oldest purpose-built cinemas, the Electric Palace Cinema comes complete with its original projection room as well as a whole host of other original features. Last week, the Indiana Senate voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill 315, authored by state Senator Randy Head (R-18).? SB 315 has now been assigned to the state House Public Policy Committee and could be heard as early as Tuesday, February 14.? SB 315 would streamline the licensing and reporting process for charity gaming events, such as the Friends of NRA banquets, by:
1.? Establishing one comprehensive charity gaming license for national organizations and foundations for use by their local affiliates;
2.? Removing the current six-to-nine week application process and requiring in its place a 21-day notification to the Indiana Gaming Commission prior to an event; and
3.? Allowing qualified organizations and foundations to "police their own" by removing requirements to turn over volunteers' personal information to the Indiana Gaming Commission.
These policy changes would greatly improve the ability of Friends of NRA committees to comply with Indiana charitable gaming laws in a timely and less cumbersome fashion, while protecting the personal information of Friends of NRA volunteers.
As many NRA members well know, Friends of NRA banquets play a critical role in raising grant money to support education, safety, and training programs in communities across the Hoosier State, such as the Boy Scouts, 4H clubs, and local law enforcement groups.? Unfortunately, some Friends of NRA chapters had difficulties holding banquets last year, which resulted in a net loss of approximately $100,000 in money that cannot be used for these Indiana groups.

Stocks, euro deflated by Greek uncertainty (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? Stocks and the euro fell while safe-haven government bonds rose on Friday as final approval for a long-awaited Greek debt deal remained elusive, keeping alive the threat of a messy sovereign default.
Euro zone finance ministers gave a lukewarm response to an inter-party agreement from Athens on austerity measures, and set more conditions for Greece to secure a second bailout needed to ensure it can meet debt repayments next month.
That left the Greek rescue deal in limbo ahead of the weekend and tempered some of the enthusiasm seen in financial markets on Thursday after Greek political leaders clinched an agreement on austerity after weeks of wrangling.
"Despite yesterday's agreement between party leaders over the austerity measures, traders still remain skeptical over whether they (Greece) can avoid a default," said Jonathan Sudaria, dealer at Capital Spreads.
"Concerns were raised that Greece still hasn't done enough to satisfy the criteria to receive a bailout."
The FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top European shares was down 0.55 percent at 1,067.63 points. The STOXX Europe 600 euro zone Banking Index (.SX7E), exposed to the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis, shed 1.4 percent.
Earlier, Asian stocks also lost ground, leaving global stocks as measured by the MSCI index down 0.6 percent at 326.04.
Despite the drop, the index is up more than 20 percent from it October lows as low interest rates by major central banks and a huge cash injection by the European Central Bank fuelled a rally in stocks, commodities and higher-yielding currencies.
The euro was 0.2 percent lower against the dollar at $1.3262, pulling back from a two-month high of $1.3322 reached on Thursday.
"Some of our clients remain concerned that the Greek situation could worsen from here," said Valentin Marinov, currency strategist at Citi. "With some event risk still very much out there, people may not be willing to keep sizeable risky positions ahead of this weekend's Greek parliamentary vote."
BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD
Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the Eurogroup, set three conditions, saying the Greek parliament must ratify the package when it meets on Sunday and a further 325 million euros of spending cuts needed to be put in place by next Wednesday, after which euro zone finance ministers would meet again.
Analysts say that, while the Greek parliament is likely to ratify the package, rising social unrest is a mounting risk going ahead.
Growth-linked currencies like the Australian dollar and commodities like copper and oil eased as investors cut exposure to riskier assets and preferred the safety of U.S. Treasuries and German Bunds.
March Bund futures were 40 ticks higher at 137.50 with 10-year yields 2 basis points lower at 2.00 percent after pushing to their highest levels this year at 2.05 percent on Thursday.
"It feels like running a software update where the status bar indicates '99 percent done', but then it takes forever to finish," Commerzbank strategists said in a note, referring to the Greek situation.
"Until one knows for sure that the system won't crash, short-covering in Bunds by fast money should prevail, with prospects for a deal next week limiting the upside though."
Risk appetite was also crimped after China's trade activity fell in January by the most since the depths of the financial crisis, raising concerns about the resilience of domestic demand that has shielded the world's second largest economy as exports have slackened.
