Growing Herbs in the Tropics - The Home of Garden Creations

Some tropical gardeners give up growing herbs in their countries because most herbs are conventionally grown in more temperate climates. While it is definitely true that herbs are usually grown in more temperate climates, and spices are grown in hotter climates, this is just a matter of convention. Some spices will not do well in temperate conditions, but many herbs do well in the tropics. Avid gardeners in the tropics can definitely grow their herbs without a problem!

Growing herbs in the tropics will work well because there is no problem with sunlight. Tropical countries usually have a long sunny period, and then a rainy period. Without autumn and winter, herbs can flourish all year round. It is true, however, that some herbs like cool climates. If gardeners notice that their herbs are struggling, it could be because the temperature of the country is too hot for the plants. This is why its best to grow herbs in the coolest part of the garden, or near a place where it can get some shade from very harsh sun.

Two things tropical herb gardeners have to look out for when growing herbs in their climate is excessive sunlight and excessive rain. During the long sunny period, plants may get too dry with regular or recommended watering schedules. This is because the sun in tropical countries tends to be stronger due to the angle the earth is in. It's important that gardeners check on their herbs often, and make sure the soil around the base of the main plant stalk is always slightly moist.

During the rainy periods, gardeners have to be careful not to water their plants at all. Rain water will often stay in the ground, and for as long as the soil is moist, you need not worry too much. In fact, during the rainy periods, you can wait till the soil around your plant turns dry before watering it, and always check the weather forecast before you do so. This assures you that your plant won't end up over watered. When growing herbs in tropical countries, over watering during the rainy period is a common mistake, and too much water will rot the plant roots, something you don't want to happen.

Growing herbs in the tropics can be quite enjoyable. While some herbs that really thrive in cold climates may not grow, most garden herbs will grow in tropical climates. Because of the almost constant sunshine and lack of winter, there is no need to wait for a planting season or growing period. You can start any time, and as soon as one plant flowers and seeds, you can start all over again. This means you can have your herbs all year round, and absolutely fresh. No need to store them in the freezer or dry them for use during the winter months!
